The Effect of a Mother-Child Art Therapy Program to Decrease Children¡¯s Problem Behaviors and Improve Mothers¡¯ Sympathy Abilities

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of decreasing infants¡¯ problem behaviors and improving mothers¡¯ sympathy abilities for children with socal or emotional problems and their mothers. The subjects were 7 couples of infants(6-7 years old) and mothers living in J city(experimental group: 7 couples, control group: 7 couples). The program was practiced via 10 sessions a week. This program is composed of 4 courses(parent education, art therapy, video supervision and feedback).
The main results are as follows. First, after their particiption in the mother-child art therapy program, the children¡¯s problem behaviors decreased. Withdrawl, depression?anxiety, social immaturity, attention problems and aggressive behaviors changed positively. Second, after their participation in the mother-child art therapy program, the mothers¡¯ sympathy abilities improved. Receptive communication, children¡¯s permission of self-guidance, and the mothers¡¯ sympathy abilities toward their children changed positively. Conclusively, after participation in the program, the children¡¯s problem behaviors decreased and the mothers¡¯ sympathy abilities increased. The limitations of the study and future tasks were discussed.
