The Effect of a Mother-Child Art Therapy Program to Decrease Children’s Problem Behaviors and Improve Mothers’ Sympathy Abilities

|
This study investigated the effect of decreasing infants’ problem behaviors and improving mothers’ sympathy abilities for children with socal or emotional problems and their mothers. The subjects were 7 couples of infants(6-7 years old) and mothers living in J city(experimental group: 7 couples, control group: 7 couples). The program was practiced via 10 sessions a week. This program is composed of 4 courses(parent education, art therapy, video supervision and feedback).
The main results are as follows. First, after their particiption in the mother-child art therapy program, the children’s problem behaviors decreased. Withdrawl, depression?anxiety, social immaturity, attention problems and aggressive behaviors changed positively. Second, after their participation in the mother-child art therapy program, the mothers’ sympathy abilities improved. Receptive communication, children’s permission of self-guidance, and the mothers’ sympathy abilities toward their children changed positively. Conclusively, after participation in the program, the children’s problem behaviors decreased and the mothers’ sympathy abilities increased. The limitations of the study and future tasks were discussed.
